Thanks to technical advances in recent years, K-Laser therapy has become an intricate part of veterinary medicine and can help relieve a multitude of symptoms in your pets. Naples Coastal Animal Hospital is delighted to offer K-Laser Therapy, which has been shown to help cats and dogs.
How K-Laser Therapy Works
K-Laser is a painless, non-invasive, FDA-cleared therapeutic treatment. It manages inflammation and pain while accelerating tissue regeneration. Through a combination of different wavelengths, frequency, and power of laser light, K-Laser increases circulation, drawing oxygen, water, and nutrients to the damaged area. This helps to stimulate the natural healing processes within your pet’s body and creates an optimal healing environment to help reduce pain, inflammation, stiffness, muscle spasms, and swelling. As the injured area heals, pain is relieved and function is restored.
The infrared laser light is diffused to a spot the size of a quarter to help target the affected area. The light interacts with tissues at a cellular level, improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane and stimulating the production of cellular energy (ATP).
Depending on the injury, K-Laser can replace or supplement medication and other treatment methods.
When K-Laser Therapy is Best for Pets
Pain Management
K-Laser temporarily decreases nerve sensitivity and blocks pain signals from being transmitted to the brain. It also promotes the production of high levels of endorphins (the body’s natural pain reliever) and enkephalins to produce an analgesic effect.
Reduced Inflammation
K-Laser causes vasodilation and activates the lymphatic drainage system, draining swollen areas. Therefore, helps to reduce swelling and pain caused by inflammation or bruising.
Wound Healing
A wavelength of light increases blood flow at the wound site and stimulates collagen production, accelerating the body’s natural healing processes. Furthermore, K-laser promotes faster healing with less scarring.
Rehabilitation
K-laser therapy for pets is highly effective for post-surgery recovery. It can help decrease inflammation, heal surgical wounds, and reduce the formation of scar tissue post-surgery.

What to Expect During Your Pet’s K-Laser Therapy Appointment
K-Laser therapy for pets is a non-invasive treatment that can be completed in an easy veterinary visit. During a treatment session, the pet will lie on a padded bed or a blanket on a table. Our vets will slowly move a handheld laser wand back and forth over the affected areas, producing a warm, relaxing sensation. Both the pet and people in the room must wear protective goggles while the laser is in use.
Usually, patient restraint or sedation is not required during K-Laser treatment. The length of treatment will depend upon the specific condition of your pet and the size of the treatment area. However, most sessions are 8 minutes in length or less. Be aware that open wounds, surgical incisions, and chronic conditions may require daily or weekly treatment.
What to Expect Post-Therapy
K-Laser therapy won’t cause your furry companion to have any serious side effects. In some cases, however, areas of pain and old injuries may be sensitive after treatment before you see improvement.
However, in many cases, improvement is visible after the first session. K-Laser therapy is cumulative in nature for most conditions. Hence, your pet may require more treatment sessions to see the desired results.
